Getting started
How do I add a diagram?
While editing a Confluence page, type /mermaid or /plantuml and pick Mermaid & PlantUML diagram (Textgram). The diagram editor opens.
Choose Mermaid or PlantUML at the top left, start from a template or paste your code, then click Save.
How do I edit an existing diagram?
Edit the page, select the diagram and click the pencil (Edit) button on the macro toolbar.
Mermaid or PlantUML?
Both are text-based. Mermaid is simpler and great for flowcharts, sequences, Gantt charts and mind maps. PlantUML covers more UML (use case, component, activity) and is common in engineering teams.
Pasting code that starts with @startuml switches the editor to PlantUML automatically. You can leave out @startuml/@enduml; they are added for you.
Generate with AI
How does it work?
Click Generate with AI, describe the diagram (for example: login flow with password reset and 2FA) and click Generate. Keep Change the current diagram ticked to edit what is already there.
If the result has a syntax error, it is automatically sent back once to be fixed. Undo AI change restores your previous code. Nothing is saved until you click Save.
Where does my data go when I use AI?
Only when you click Generate, your description and the current diagram code are sent to an AI model hosted by Atlassian inside its cloud (Forge LLMs). No third-party AI service is involved.
Viewing diagrams
How do I zoom and move around?
Hover the diagram to show + and − buttons. Ctrl+scroll (Cmd+scroll on Mac) zooms where the pointer is; when zoomed, drag to move; double-click resets.
The ⤢ button opens the diagram full screen, scaled to fit, where plain scrolling zooms.
Does it work with dark mode, search and export?
Yes. Diagrams follow Confluence's light or dark theme, the diagram code is included in Confluence search, and PDF/Word exports include the rendered diagram.
Troubleshooting
I see “Syntax error on line N”
The line number points to your code. Common causes: an arrow without a target (A -->), unbalanced brackets or quotes, or a diagram type keyword missing on the first line (for example flowchart LR). Syntax reference in the editor opens the official documentation.
PlantUML !include or sprites don't work
Diagrams are rendered inside your browser without contacting external servers, so !include of files or URLs and external sprite libraries are not available. Built-in !theme values work.
My diagram is too large
Very large diagrams (over 16,384 pixels on a side) are refused to keep pages fast. Split it into several diagrams.
Editing is disabled
This happens when the app's license has expired. Existing diagrams keep displaying on pages; a Confluence admin can renew the license under Manage apps.
Privacy and security
Is my diagram data sent anywhere?
No. The diagram code is stored in the macro on your page, and diagrams are drawn in your browser inside Confluence. The app runs on Atlassian's platform and does not call external servers. The only exception is Generate with AI, which uses Atlassian-hosted models when you click it.
